If you have previously owned a Bull Terrier
you will be aware of the breed's quirks and peculiarities,
but if not we would ask you to consider deeply before finally
deciding. Although wonderful companions, Bull Terriers
are not usually obedient and they do resent challenges
from other dogs. Many dislike all other dogs or any other
4-legged creatures, and it is never wise to consider obtaining
any Bull Terrier to mix with a dog of the same sex. It
is very important that Bull Terriers are kept under total
control at all times and the only way to retain control
of a dog in a public place is by keeping it on a lead or
line. It is also most essential to have a well-fenced garden
with good gates.
Where possible we ascertain the history
of a Welfare dog and this is taken into account when selecting
its new home This is why we need full details of the home
conditions offered. We do not knowingly rehouse animals that
have exhibited signs of viciousness towards humans, but even
the most docile of dogs may cause trouble and damage to persons
or property. New owners should ensure they are insured against
all third party risks, this may be included under a domestic
house policy, but this must be checked with your insurers.
We also recommend veterinary insurance, and this will normally
incorporate third party risk cover.
It is fairly rare for us to have dogs
suitable to live with young children below seven years of
age as the Trust will only re-house an animal to such a home
if it has a proven history with young children, or where
we have strong grounds to believe that it will live successfully
with them.
Welfare dogs go only as pets, and to
live in your house. They are not to be bred from and are
often neutered prior to being re-housed. Although their
presence may act as a deterrent to wrongdoers, their function
is not that of a guard dog. We never have young puppies,
and only occasionally animals less than one year of age
when the donation required is £200. Over one year
of age, by far the vast majority, the donation required
is £150. Generally
any Bull Terriers available are held in kennels in various
parts of the country. Sometimes dogs are kept in the owner’s
home and we may be able to unite you. This may be nearer
to your home. We would ask you to bear in mind that we
have not assessed these dogs. Apart from advising you their
location we can accept no responsibility as to their suitability
for your particular purposes. If you are united this way
we make no specific charge but we do ask you to consider
making a donation to the Trust. Cheques should be made
out to the Bull Terrier Club Welfare Trust and sent to
our Hampshire address.
If you wish to proceed please phone us
about a week after submitting the application form. We
will not normally phone you. Where possible we do home
checks, but no one will call without contacting you. You
must bring proof of your identity and of your address when
collecting a dog.
Yours
sincerely,

Please read the following terms and
conditions as you will have to agree to them at the end
of the form.
Dogs
must normally be collected from the Trust Kennels.
In the event of my being able
to obtain a dog through the BTC Welfare scheme I agree to the
following conditions:
• That I shall be required to
sign an adoption contract.
• That the dog is intended
for a pet only, and is not to be used for breeding.
• That I am responsible
for the dog in every way, that I will insure against third
party risks.
• That I am willing for
a field worker to visit, and in the event of my not being
able to keep the dog I will return it to BTC Welfare Trust
kennels.
• That it is necessary
for my garden to be well fenced.
• That I will bring proof
of my identity and my address on collecting any dog.
• That I am aware that it
is the Trust's aims to unite applicants with a Bull Terrier
compatible with their needs, but although they take every
care, they cannot guarantee the animal's health, or that
it will be suitable for any purpose.
• That in the instance of
a direct transfer I understand it is a contract between that
owner and myself, and that the BTC Welfare Trust merely link
me with an available, but unseen and un-assessed dog. I understand
the Trust cannot accept any responsibility in this situation.
